ABOUT THE BİENNİAL /HERE AND NOW
3 million people under 18 years of age live in the city of Istanbul where the Istanbul Children and Youth Art Biennial was initiated in 2010. This biennial is Turkey’s largest art event for children and young people both from across Turkey and abroad, and has been organized every other year since 2010.
The biennial aims to investigate and reflect on creativity. Learning to create and appreciate visual aesthetics may be more important than ever for the development of the next generation of children as they grow up. The biennial strives to provide an opportunity for children and young people to produce artwork in different media integrating different disciplines, such as painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture as well as approaches that use time-based media to create works that incorporate film, sound, performance, theater and music.
The theme that has been selected for the 5th Biennial in 2018, is HERE AND NOW! Artworks and performances specifically created on this theme will be exhibited on shared platforms in different venues in Istanbul 19 April – 23 May 2018.
HERE AND NOW! What does it really mean to be at this particular place, at this particular time? Sometimes it’s enough just to look around and notice what our life is like, right now in this place at this time. Does being here and now only reflect our every day lives or our own worlds or can you be somewhere else at the same time, in your mind or in a virtual world? Can we look inward or outward? Is the past or the future linked only to one’s own lived experience? How do we perceive time? Or is it an illusion? Is it irresponsible or careless to only live for the moment? İs being here and now a reminder about the value of nature in our lives and how we are strongly linked to it? How do you think children and young people around the world experience HERE AND NOW!
Each biennial exhibition comprises of one week with a focus on Children’s Rights and a range of art activities that take place throughout the biennial month, incorporating hands-on workshops, live performances, meetings, discussions and seminars.
We welcome all children and young people to participate with their creative minds in any medium and share this journey HERE AND NOW!
